Costa Rica, England, Italy, Uruguay
COSTA RICA:
Saturday 14 June (15:00 v. Uruguay)
Friday 20 June (12:00 v. Italy)
Tuesday 24 June (12:00 v. England)
Finding the ticos in the area always involves a trip out to one of many restaurants in New Jersey. Small friendly places like Guanaticos (261 Irvington Avenue, South Orange, NJ), Maplewood Deli (1628 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, NJ), and The Banderas (41 Park Avenue, Summit, NJ) will all have their televisions fixed on the action, but larger, and more alcohol-friendly Olga's Place (214 LT Glenn Zamorski Drive, Elizabeth, NJ) will probably be the home of the most boisterous crowds for Costa Rica games.
ENGLAND:
Saturday 14 June (18:00 v. Italy)
Thursday 19 June (15:00 v. Uruguay)
Tuesday 24 June (12:00 v. Costa Rica)
The English will be hard to avoid anywhere in the city on their game days, but no doubt Nevada Smiths (100 Third Avenue, East Village) will do their best to jam them all into their brand new space. For a slightly lower chance of getting a beer tossed on you, try three spots in Brooklyn: Black Horse Pub (568 5th Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn), Highbury Pub (1002 Cortelyou Road, Ditmas Park, Brooklyn), and The Monro (481 5th Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn), which are all used to the big game crowd and can serve out all the old favorites from the kitchen.
ITALY:
Saturday 14 June (18:00 v. England)
Friday 20 June (12:00 v. Costa Rica)
Tuesday 24 June (12:00 v. Uruguay)
And here you thought Mulberry Street gets excited during the Feast of San Gennaro. But during Italian games the whole block between Broome and Grand will be standing room only. You might never get close to it, but the Mulberry Street Bar (176 Mulberry Street, Little Italy) offers the perfect old-school Italian-American charm to watch games, and behemoth Grotta Azzurra (177 Mulberry Street, Little Italy) across the street offers multiple rooms and seems to have thoroughly taken over their side of the street. For a completely different experience, hop the 7 train out to Corona for the one year old Cucino a Modo Mio (51-01 108th Street, Corona, Queens), where the owners have added an outdoor "beer piazza" for watching the World Cup.
URUGUAY:
Saturday 14 June (15:00 v. Costa Rica)
Thursday 19 June (15:00 v. England)
Tuesday 24 June (12:00 v. Italy)
Uruguay will be looking to build on the immense success they had in 2010, and will certainly have a large fan base at every game in their neighboring Brazil. Those stuck in Jackson Heights will all be gravitating towards 37th Avenue. Last year, La Uruguaya Bakery was a tiny one screen affair but has morphed into La Gran Uruguaya (85-02 37th Avenue, Jackson Heights, Queens) and now has an attached restaurant and bar. Both sides will be full of supporters and chivito steak sandwiches. Also serving this and other grilled meats is Chivito d'Oro (84-02 37th Avenue, Jackson Heights, Queens), which can seem calm until Diego Forlán's blond hair starts waving as he streaks down the sideline. Across the Hudson, the Uruguayan community in Union City, New Jersey will be descending on Uruguayan pizza joint Pizzarra's (4000 Bergenline Avenue, Union City, NJ).
